Livable Design was established in 2009 by its parent company, Eskaton Senior Residences and Services. Because of Eskaton’s work with older adults, it became clear just how important a home environment is to supporting independence and connection. In recent years, Eskaton has identified a void in the current housing market and aims to provide an innovative model of home design that supports independence and ease not just for older adults, but for all lifestyles, generations and abilities.
In 2005, Wes Justyn, an Eskaton corporate and foundation board member, and his wife, Robbie, decided to build a home for Wes’s mother on his property. He knew he wanted to build a supportive home that incorporated universal design features and one that would adapt over time as his mothers needs changed. As he set out, however, he found few resources or programs available that would tell him how to build a home for life. He brought his experience to the Eskaton board. As a result of the Justyn’s experience, the Livable Design program was formally created.
